Sixth grade students assume a more analytical approach to literature. They should be encouraged and given more opportunities to express themselves. They should also be given the opportunity to share information in a variety of formats that support creativity and some risk-taking in the use of language. (See Handbook.) In sixth grade reading courses, teachers should help students explore a wider repertoire of literary works that illustrate the linguistic and cultural diversity found in today’s society.
